Grace Ononiwu was appointed as Director of Legal Services within the Crown Prosecution Service in April 2021, with responsibility for providing assurance to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the quality of the legal decision-making and casework progression across a number of CPS Areas. Grace Ononiwu was appointed as Director of Legal Services within the Crown Prosecution Service in April 2021, with responsibility for providing assurance to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the quality of the legal decision-making and casework progression across a number of CPS Areas. She also has thematic responsibility for Legal Guidance
and Development, and Head of Profession support.
Grace qualified as a solicitor in 1991 and joined a private firm of solicitors practising criminal law. She joined the CPS as a Crown Prosecutor and held a number of positions, which led to her appointment as Northamptonshire Chief Crown Prosecutor (CCP) in April 2005, making her the first African Caribbean to be appointed as a Chief Crown Prosecutor in the history of the CPS.
In 2009, Grace was appointed into London as Deputy Chief Prosecutor (DCCP) of, what was then, the largest CPS region, with responsibility for the London Districts. In 2012, she was appointed Chief Crown Prosecutor for the East of England Region, and in 2014 appointed Chief Crown Prosecutor of the West Midlands Region, making her the first woman/ first black person to hold both posts.
Grace has made a significant contribution to the CPS Equality and Diversity agenda and was previously the Chair of the National Black Crown Prosecution Association (NBCPA).
Grace was awarded the OBE in 2008 in recognition for her work with the CPS and received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Hertfordshire in 2017, in recognition for her contribution to justice and the legal system, including her ongoing work to promote legal education. In November 2021, the University of Hertfordshire’s Law Court Building was renamed the “Grace Ononiwu Law Court Building” in her honour. Grace is now a Visiting Professor of the University and Patron of their Law Clinic which promotes practical legal experience to students.
On 31 August 2022 Grace received the honorary award of Doctor of the University from Birmingham City University in recognition of exceptional service to law and order in the West Midlands.
In the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Grace was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to Law and Order and was included in the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 Power List, which features 100 of the UK’s most influential men and women of African, African Caribbean and African American heritage.

Dr Shungu (M’gadzah)’s career includes working for 8 years in Higher Education teaching Post-graduate MSc Educational Psychology Students. She has over 30 years of experience working with young people and adults with learning disability, communication, social, emotional and mental health needs.
Dr Shungu has a doctorate in Education and Child Psychology and her thesis was in the area of Emotional Intelligence. She has recently developed the Six Stages Inclusive framework for Understanding and Dealing with Discrimination and Racism designed for individuals and organisations.
She offers psychological assessments, therapeutic services and is an expert witness in medico-legal, antiracism claims and educational appeals. She also offers diversity and inclusion coaching, supervision, training and consultancy for organisations. She is currently delivering training and executive coaching for the NHS, Schools and Corporate organisations.
Dr Shungu is Chair of the Six Stages Framework Board. She is a Governor for a special school in Essex.

Prior to her role as PCC, she worked as a Business Expansion Specialist in Inward Investment, where she supported a diverse range of high-growth SMEs and global businesses, helping them navigate and accelerate their expansion plans. Her extensive experience spans both the public and private sectors, having served as a District Councillor with a cabinet portfolio for Safer and Stronger Communities until 2019. This has equipped her with a deep understanding of the challenges facing communities today, particularly in light of resource pressures on policing and the public sector as a whole.
A strong advocate for public-private partnerships, Nicolle recognises the importance of collaboration in delivering effective solutions in both the physical and digital world we live in. As Vice Chair and Women's Representative on Labour's East Midlands Regional Board, and a former East Midlands Representative on Labour’s National Policy Forum, she understands the transformative power of policies that shape communities for the better.
Nicolle is also a Member of the Nova Education Trust, a cross-phase Multi-Academy Trust that educates over 10,000 pupils. Through this role and engagements with schools and colleges across Derbyshire, she is deeply invested in promoting online safety for young people, parents and families. Additionally, as a former member of a Digital Data and Technology Advisory Board, she has worked closely with universities, local government, and professional services to attract and retain tech talent in the region. She now sits on the East Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre board, contributing to efforts in strengthening the region’s cybersecurity infrastructure, education and support offer for individuals, schools and businesses.

In 2023 she was headhunted by the College of Policing to lead the National Police Integrity Programmed for England and Wales, which included developing and delivering the national Code of Ethics for policing in 2014. Since retiring Karen has retained an active and diverse professional portfolio.
Karen is director of her own coaching company K Vanterpool Consultancy and is actively involved in coaching, mentoring and leadership development in the public and third sectors.
Karen has worked with police forces having designed and developed a positive action Developing Diverse Leaders programme for Greater Manchester Police, which since 2017 has seen positive results for BME and female candidates seeking promotion and gaining senior positions.
Karen has worked with Barnardo’s Charity for several years designing and delivering reciprocal mentoring and emerging black and female leaders’ programs with a partner company- People and Performance. More recently this partnership has been working with World Wildlife Foundation delivering a reciprocal mentoring program.
She joined Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) as a non-executive director in June 2020. Keen to make a difference, Karen has immersed herself into the role and become an active member in several committees and subgroups. Karen is proactive in her support of the staff networks, eager to ensure their views and concerns are acted upon. Karen has recently been appointed as Deputy Chair of CPFT.
Karen is a member of the Seacole group, a national network of non-executive and chairs in the health system which has one vision which is for NHS Boards to reflect the diversity of the patients and communities served.
Karen is currently involved with Greater Manchester Fire Service and the Combined Authority – designing and delivering her Developing Diverse Leaders program. She is a school governor and involved in working with young future leaders.
Karen is a qualified ILM L7 coach, qualified trainer and has a NCFE CACHE L3 award in Counsellor. She brings her own life experience and passion to her equality and leadership training and development.

Caroline's "Diverse Mental Health" (DMH) Perspective emphasizes the need to understand and address the intersectional impact. Solutions should tackle these issues directly to improve mental health, inclusivity, and productivity.

She focuses on strategic and personalized interventions aimed at fostering environments that support better mental health and well-being for everyone. She is trained in Creative Personal & Professional Development, Intercultural Business Training & Moderation and Stress Management.
